Industry in Tamano City

The major industries in Tamano are shipbuilding and mining.
According to a recent country-wide development of the service economy, we also see an increase of tertiary industries, such as tourism and service-production.

(1) Manufacturing industry

In old days, salt manufacturing started in this area utilizing long hours of daylight, the peaceful sea, and a calm climate.
In 1863 after more than 20 years of development, a broad salt farming area was completed and Irihama-style salt manufacturing (utilizing the ebb and flow of tides) was continued after establishment of Hibiki Beach (current the Onzaki area) in 1829 and Higashi-nozaki Beach in 1838.
In addition to these areas, salt farms were established in many other areas, including Uno and Tama districts.
In the 1960s, salt manufacturing technology advanced rapidly.
As a result, a new automated salt manufacturing system using the “Membrane concentration salt manufacturing method”replaced the traditional manufacturing system using salt farms.
This new style of salt manufacturing still continues even today.
Since 1917 the Tama Shipbuilding Company, the main company among shipbuilding companies in Tamano City, has utilized the old salt farming areas in Tama district to establish and develop their shipbuilding facility.
Later, the company name changed to Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. which still exists today.
At the same time, the business of another major industry in Tamano, the mining industry represented by the Hibi Refinery, is still active.

(2) Trade commerce

We have shopping malls in the Chikko and Tama districts in Tamano City.
Since there is no core urban district in Tamano City, several small community-based markets have been formed.
As the needs of consumers have become diversified in recent years, a large volume of consumption and purchases by people in Tamano outflow to Okayama and Kurashiki cities.
However in order to form the first “complex urban area” in Tamano, a large-sized integrated commercial facility, having banks and a large men’s clothing shop which moved and launched into the facility, was built to reenergize and develop the Uno district.

(3) Agriculture

Agriculture in Tamano City is typically an urban neighborhood type of agriculture.
The ratio of part-time farmers is very high, counting for approximately 70%.
The major products of this city vary from rice, wheat and eggplants grown in the reclaimed land, to flowers that grow in a mild climate.

(4) Fishery

The fishing industry of Tamano is mainly coastal fishing and fish farming.
In the case of coastal fishing, we maintain fishing banks in appropriate conditions while releasing fry into the ocean every year in order to maintain a stable stock of fish catches.
In the case of fish farming, we continue to research and improve our farming technologies in order to improve the quality and quantity of main cultivated sea products, sea vegetables and left-eyed flounders, in small cants on the sea surface.
